Back in December of 2015 I took a look at what I thought would be the top films in the science fiction and fantasy genres, for 2016. Was I right, was I wrong? Take a look below and see how far off I was. (all amounts are in Millions of dollars)
|Title||Predicted Rank||Actual Rank||Predicted $||Actual $|
|Star Wars Rogue One||1||2↓||$316||$408↑92|
|Captain America: Civil War||2||3↓||$314||$407↑93|
|Batman v Superman||3||8↓||$306||$330↑26|
|Star Trek Beyond||6||14↓||$204||$159↓45|
|Secret Life of Pets||10||4↑||$150||$368↑218|
|Independence Day: Resurgence||11||21↓||$148||$103↓45|
|Kung Fu Panda 3||15||17 ↓||$129||$143↑14|
All these genre top film numbers are as of December 31, 2016. While I may have been wrong in the ranking of Star Wars: Rogue One and Captain America: Civil War, I wasn’t too far off.
The biggest drop in rank was Warcraft, I truly don’t know what happened here. This film bombed at the domestic box-office and blew-up internationally. Most big films do half or a third of their World-Wide Box-Office at home, this film did one-tenth. The majority of it’s success was in China, where its opening weekend was bigger than its forty-nine day run in US theaters.
The biggest rise in rank was Zootopia. Disney is having great success with all their divisions and it’s no surprise that Zootopia would do what it did, I should have know better and added $200 to my prediction.
