Top films of 2016

Back in December of 2015 I took a look at what I thought would be the top films in the science fiction and fantasy genres, for 2016. Was I right, was I wrong? Take a look below and see how far off I was. (all amounts are in Millions of dollars)

Title Predicted Rank Actual Rank Predicted $ Actual $
Star Wars Rogue One 1  2 $316 $40892
Captain America: Civil War 2 3 $314 $40793
Batman v Superman 3 8 $306 $33026
X-Men: Apocalypse 4  15 $231 $15576
Finding Dory 5  1 $223 $486263
Star Trek Beyond 6  14 $204 $15945
Suicide Squad 7  9 $190 $325135
Fantastic Beasts 8  11 $184 $22339
Jungle Book 9  5 $150 $364214
Secret Life of Pets 10  4 $150 $368218
Independence Day: Resurgence 11  21 $148 $10345
Deadpool 12 6 $135 $363228
Doctor Strange 13 10 $132 $22997
Warcraft 14 33 $130 $4783
Kung Fu Panda 3 15 17   $129 $14314
Zootopia 16  7  $128 $341213

All these genre top film numbers are as of December 31, 2016. While I may have been wrong in the ranking of Star Wars: Rogue One and Captain America: Civil War, I wasn’t too far off.

The biggest drop in rank was Warcraft, I truly don’t know what happened here. This film bombed at the domestic box-office and blew-up internationally. Most big films do half or a third of their World-Wide Box-Office at home, this film did one-tenth. The majority of it’s success was in China, where its opening weekend was bigger than its forty-nine day run in US theaters.

The biggest rise in rank was Zootopia. Disney is having great success with all their divisions and it’s no surprise that Zootopia would do what it did, I should have know better and added $200 to my prediction.
